Vision Wamego Public Meeting Recap

The first Vision Wamego Public Meeting was held Tuesday, August 25.  With more than 40 participants, a lot of great ideas were generated. Participants discussed what they would like to keep or maintain about Wamego, what they would like to change and what they would like to create or build. Each participant was then given 5 dots to place on the charts to help "rank" the possibilities. These results will then be compiled and used to help guide the consultants and steering committee members as they continue work on a vision and strategic plan for Wamego.

Public Meeting Agenda

Background:

In 2003, the community of Wamego, with the assistance of a professional planner produced the “2003 Wamego Market Analysis” which included many recommendations designed to enhance the capacity of the community to support retail business, increase visitation, and enhance the recreational assets of the community. Since that time, action to complete some of the primary recommendations has been taken, while others have not.

Since 2003, many factors have changed, including: a large increase in troops at Fort Riley, announcement of the National Bio and Agro Defence Facility proposed Manhattan location and a downturn in the economy.

The purpose of Vision Wamego is to examine all factors: Quality of Life, Economic Development and Infrastarucute to unite the community around a Vision for Wamego.  Where do we want our community to be in 5-10 years?

Wamego’s leaders kicked off the Vision Wamego project by celebrating the community’s accomplishments and creating a timeline of important Wamego events, businesses and leaders.

With a solid foundation of leadership, entrepreneurship and success, the Steering Committee hopes to build upon Wamego’s vibrant history as they look towards its future.

Consultants from George Butler Associates and Shockey Consulting led the group through a community assessment activity and visioning exercise. Members of the steering committee discussed characteristics and features they would like to see, what things are already in place, what needs to occur and any obstacles that need to be addressed when working towards the vision.
Topics of discussion included: growth, job creation and retention, preferred types of businesses, infrastructure, quality of life projects and public/private partnerships.

“As a participant in the Visioning project, now underway under the auspices of the City of Wamego, I am eager to see where the community wants to be 10 years from now,” a Vision Wamego Steering Committee Member said. “I've long believed that if you aren't driving your own bus, someone else is. So it is time for Wamego to decide whether it wants to be led into the future by Manhattan, Junction City, Ft. Riley, NBAF, etc., or take charge of its own journey and decide what kind of community it wants to be. Should be an interesting ride!”

Over the next few months, a series of community input meetings and surveys will be conducted to help the consultants and the Steering Committee draft the vision document.

Steering Committee Members include: Clark Balderson, Doug Conwell, Chris Hupe, Sue Eichman, Rob Eichman, Chris Hupe, Colleen Lord, Ben Meek, Jim Meinhardt, Bob Morse, Cheri Pugh, Tom Rawson, Mike Rice, Dave & Jan Vanderbilt and Lance White. Ex-Officio Members include: Bob Cole, Bill Ditto and Merl Page.
