A major attraction is the physical beauty of the terrain around Onaga. Abrupt bluffs, steep hills, and rich stream valleys offer panoramas that are exceptional for the Midwest. Travelers to Onaga cannot pick a route that is not scenic.
The "Round Barn" was built on the fairgrounds in 1921 as the Pottawatomie County Fair Pavilion. Funded by the Pottawatomie County Fair Association, it was used for all exhibits of the County Fair. Many years later the barn was used as a livestock sale barn. This unique round structure has recently been acquired by a non-profit corporation that is applying for historic-site designation for the barn and raising money to have it completely restored to its historic beauty.
The Doughboy Memorial was unveiled by the local American Legion on Armistice Day in 1920 as a memorial to the veterans of the World War 1. This beautiful bronze statue sits atop a commemorative limestone base. The thrilling appearance of the sculpture is a reminder of the horrendous sacrifices made during the first "Great War". The Onaga Historical Society Museum Complex includes an old original homestead cabin, an historic one-room schoolhouse and a Union Pacific caboose. A rich assortment of historic photographs, artifacts, tools and materials is displayed in each of the buildings. Onaga and the immediately surrounding area are home to several accomplished amateur and professional musicians! Some specialize in old-time traditional country music, while others play jazz, rock, and rhythm and blues. From time to time these musicians can be heard at community events or for private gatherings in the area. Onaga High School presents frequent plays, athletic events and concerts. The Onaga Area Chamber of Commerce hosts major community celebrations during the 4th of July and Christmas. The Pottawatomie County Fair is held at the Onaga Fairgrounds each August. See this site for more information. The Onaga branch of the Pottawatomie-Wabaunsee Regional Library maintains
a collection of 20,500 books as well as audiocassettes, popular magazines
and newspapers. Microfilm copies of all available Onaga newspapers are
also available, as well as a full range of interlibrary loan services
from throughout the state.
