Parks and Recreation in Wamego.
Perhaps the most lasting image of Wamego is the Schonhoff Windmill
and its location, the Wamego City Park.

Regularly declared the most beautiful city park in Kansas by statewide
sources, the park is situated one block from the attractive downtown
business district. Besides the Nationally Registered mill, the park
features a lovely pond, statues from the St. Louis World's Fair and
an enormous rock left behind by the glaciers whose most forward progress
reached here tens of thousands of years ago. A small train operates
in the summer months taking children on a ride past the pond and gardens.
The rather new public swimming pool is ensconced in one corner of the
park, and several different gardens dot the landscape. Picnic tables
are placed periodically throughout the park, and a covered pavilion
with fireplace is also available for larger gatherings.
The city has an active recreation program, centered on the summer months.
It features softball, baseball and swimming. Beyond the official city
programs there are touch football, soccer, the Columbian Theatre's Summer
Theatre Academy for children ages 4 to 16 and numerous other family
oriented activities. A new multi-field ball complex is in development,
which will usher in large-scale ball tournaments for all ages.
Of course the local schools feature a multitude of recreational activities
throughout the school year. Wamego is known for its successful sports
teams, and the various music programs repeatedly are selected for special
honors, such as participation in the Chicago Thanksgiving Day parade
in 2002.
The Louisville Roundabout Trail follows along country roads in the Wamego
- Louisville area. From downtown Wamego take 6th street west 3.5 miles,
past the newest 9 holes of the Wamego Country Club golf course, and
past historic old stone homes on the south. Flint Rock road will then
take you 7.5 miles north through rolling hills and ranch and farm country.
Noel and Marten roads run East 4.5 miles over a very scenic segment
of this trail to Adams Creek, Old Farm and back to Wamego on Louis Vieux
Road.
This 25 mile county route is suitable for driving, hiking or biking.
23.0 miles of it is graveled road, 1.5 miles is dirt. Only .5 miles
is paved. Careful crossing Highway 24, a 4 lane highway, on Flint Rock
Road.
This is a route that will take you through town, then past gracious
suburbs, and then deep into the country surrounding Wamego!
Enjoy!
