Pottawatomie County is home to well-developed historic museum complexes in Onaga, St. Marys, Wamego and Westmoreland. Constructed and managed by local historic societies, these museums are filled with artifacts, books, other publications, clothing, tools, etc., dating back to Territorial times in the 19th century. Wamego is home to the renowned Columbian Theatre, which offers year-round theater, music and dance productions, as well as a beautiful gallery for area artists. Wamego will soon offer the "Oz Museum", housing one of the most robust collections of Oz artifacts in existence. This new museum is slated to open in the summer of 2003. There are many highly accomplished professional artists and musicians living in and near Pottawatomie County. Artists' works are sold nationwide but exhibited locally on a periodic basis. Area musicians offer a broad spectrum of musical talent, ranging from the Operatic to Country and Western. McCain Auditorium at Kansas State University and the Performing Arts Center in Topeka, each present theatrical, musical and dance events presented by professional troupes from around the world.
