Recent Wamego High School graduate Jacob White was one of the over 50 students who enrolled in the high school’s spring 2021 Career & Technical Education Internship Program. After entering the class with a directed plan to learn more about professional opportunities in architecture, Jacob landed a local internship with a professional architecture firm and got an early start on his career.
After joining the internship class, Jacob reached out to Anderson-Knight Architects in Manhattan for an internship opportunity and joined the team there for regular on-site job shadowing. Typically spending a few hours every other weekday at Anderson-Knight, Jacob joined in on meetings, visited project sites, and observed the guidance and projects provided to the firm’s college-level interns.
Jacob says that his internship experience solidified his interest in becoming an architect while also increasing his exposure to the tools and skills utilized in the field. During the internship, he noted that architects spend a great deal of time handling cross-functional communications and participating in meetings. By joining these meetings and getting an inside look into active architectural projects, Jacob says that he gained a more complete understanding of the importance of being communicative while working as an architect.
After having already completed an architectural internship in high school, Jacob will be taking the next step in his career by beginning studies at Kansas State University during the fall 2021 semester. Jacob plans to complete the university’s 5-year Master of Architecture program.
